Morris Gould was born in Brighton, grew up in Lincolnshire and was educated at Millfield in Somerset and King's College London. At 15 he founded a punk rock band, The Ripchords, whose sole release, an eponymous EP with four tracks, was championed by John Peel and quickly sold out.
