The county was created by an act of the Congress of the Republic of Texas on December 14, 1837. The county was named for the town of Montgomery, Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 455,746. A 55.14% growth rate in the ten years from the last U.S. Census—making the county the 24th fastest-growing county in the United States. The seat of the county is Conroe.
