Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Metis people are an indigenous people descended from both Native American/First Nations, African and European ancestors. Though the term can be used to describe many peoples of mixed ancestry it is most commonly used to refer to groups descended from the Michif-speaking peoples of the Red River region in what is today modern Manitoba, North Dakota, and Minnesota. The Red River peoples are part of the same ethnic group as many of the Canadian Metis peoples. The word Metis is pronounced Meh-tee, French for "Mixed-blood."
