The nineteenth century was a very important period in the history of the United States. The purpose of this book was to examine how territorial expansion appears in the frontier literature of the early nineteenth century. Besides looking through the historical facts and the cultural-historical significance of the frontier, the literary background of the topic is examined as well. For James Fenimore Cooper was surely the most significant and best known novelist of the frontier, it is analysed how he wrote about the settling on the frontier and civilization of the wilderness. With his well known work, the Leatherstocking Tales, he created the myth of the frontier in the nineteenth century American prose fiction. As this book was written not only for people who are interested in the myth of the frontier, but teachers of English language as well, in the pedagogical implications part of the book it is examined why youngsters should read Cooper. With sample exercises and a lesson plan it is also examined how Cooper’s novels can be used on English lessons, for his stories are so interesting and full of adventures that students would surely like them in English too.
