High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Sant Namdev or Nam dev was a prominent religious poet from Maharashtra state, India in the Hindu tradition, and was one the earliest writers in the Marathi language. He also wrote some hymns in the Hindi and the Punjabi languages during his about 25 years stay in Punjab. The village which was named after him is now in Pakistan's Punjab. Sixty-one of his compositions are included within Sikhism's holy scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib. Namdev was born in the village of NarasVamani, now located in the Parbhani District in Maharashtra. He was born to a tailor named Damasheti Relekar and his wife Gonai (Gunabai). Soon after his birth, his family moved to Pandharpur in the Solapur district of Maharashtra, where the prominent temple of the Hindu God Vitthal or Vithoba (form of Vishnu) is located. His parents were devotees of Vithoba.
