She was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, and in the early 1970s, her family moved to Miami. In 1980 the family relocated to New Hampshire, where she attended the Phillips Exeter Academy and graduated in 1982 as a Presidential Scholar. She attended Yale University, where she graduated summa cum laude from the B.A. in Literature program, winning the Willet's Prize (fiction writing). She graduated from Columbia University's MFA in Writing program in 1991. From 1991 to 1993, she worked for The National Enquirer, Soap Opera Digest, High Times, Mademoiselle, The New York Times Magazine and New York magazine, in a variety of posts ranging from copy editor to writer. She began doing reports for People magazine in the mid-1990s, moving to a job at Vanity Fair in 2000. Her article "The Baby Dinner" was optioned by Working Title Films for use as a film.
