Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Nanophytoplankton are free-floating, aquatic plant; contains algae, protists, and cyanobacteria; photosynthetic, autotrophic plankton. They have chlorophyll in their cells. The main difference between nanophytoplankton and plankton is its smaller size (2-20 µm versus >50 µm). Nanophytoplankton fix large amounts of carbon, which would otherwise be released as carbon dioxide. In the Southern Ocean in the Antarctic zone, nanophytoplankton are the most abundant type of plankton in terms of number, but not volume. Antarctic marine flora consists almost entirely of algae, with phytoplankton, and therefore nanophytoplankton, being the most numerous type, as having great importance.
