In enzymology, a naphthoate synthase (EC 4.1.3.36) is an enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reaction o-succinylbenzoyl-CoA rightleftharpoons CoA + 1,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoate Hence, this enzyme has one substrate, o-succinylbenzoyl-CoA, and two products, CoA and 1,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoate. This enzyme belongs to the family of lyases, specifically the oxo-acid-lyases, which cleave carbon-carbon bonds. The systematic name of this enzyme class is o-succinylbenzoyl-CoA 1,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoate-lyase (cyclizing CoA-forming). Other names in common use include 1,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoate synthase, dihydroxynaphthoate synthase, and o-succinylbenzoyl-CoA 1,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoate-lyase (cyclizing). This enzyme participates in ubiquinone biosynthesis.
