National Highway 22 (NH 22) is a 459 km (285 mi)National Highway in Northern India that connects Ambala with Khab, a small town near the India-China border and Shipkila in Himachal Pradesh. In reality, Khab is not the last place in India on the NH22. The NH22 extends beyond Khab into Namgial, situated on the top of the amazingly beautiful Namgial valley, and past Tashigang. Namgial is still considered part of India which was the basic reason why NH22 was extended beyond it. NH22 ends in a nondescript place after a series of amazing switchbacks (hairpin bends) as it winds down from the heights of the Shivaliks into the Tashigang valley. The first 40 km between Ambala and Zirakpur is now termed as AMBALA CHANDIGARH EXPRESSWAY and is maintained by GMR group. It is one of the best maintained roads in India with lots of bridges and 3 major flyovers.after zirakpur four laning was approved by government of india betwwen section of zirakpur and parwanoo in 2009.It is nearly on completion now.the total cost was estimated was 900 crores. There is no speed limit on this stretch. The 100 Km route from Shimla up Northeast was featured in the History Channel`s "Deadliest Roads" series for its poor maintenance and hazardous driving conditions all thru the year. GMR Corporation appears to maintain that 100 Km stretch because of the need to transport material to its two projects upriver. Beyond Dhalli, it is not maintained much but still a lifeline for the local people.
