High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A neutron bomb, or enhanced radiation weapon (ERW), is a type of tactical nuclear weapon designed specifically to release a large portion of its energy as energetic neutron radiation rather than explosive energy. An ERW explosion is typically about one-tenth as powerful as that of a comparable fission-type atomic bomb because standard thermonuclear weapons create increased explosive yield by capturing their neutron radiation. Although their extreme blast and heat effects are not eliminated, the increased radiation released by ERWs is meant to affect biological material (which may otherwise be protected from the heat of an explosion) rather than material infrastructure. ERWs are still much more destructive than conventional bombs. They were formerly built mainly by the United States.
