The Integrated missile research and development programme was a highly secretive programme and scientific effort carried out jointly by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Ministry of Science (MoSci) sometimes in 1987. In response to the surprise success of the missile programme of neighboring India, the ISI and Joint Intelligence Technical persuaded chief of army staff general Mirza Aslam Beg, after subsequently attaining the authenticated intelligence information that confirmed the Indian missile programme`s existence. Ultimately, Pakistan started the programme, first starting with the Space Research Commission (SRC) who had been conducting terminal launches of space rockets earlier. Together with the KRL, the SRC built Hatf-I which took its first flight in space in 1989.
