Pantalone (French: Pantalon), full name Pantalone dei bisognosi (Italian for 'Pantalone of the needy'), is a Commedia dell'arte stock character that is portrayed as a debased old citizen-merchant. He and Il Dottore are the two types old characters in the Vecchio class (old men); they are the alter ego of each other, Pantalone being the decadent wealthy merchant, and Il Dottore being the decadent erudite. He is a miserly merchant whose wealth is decaying, his greatest days behind him; he is often libidinous towards females inappropriately younger than him He is portrayed as a Venetian and often speaks in the Venetian dialect.
