Its origins are said to have begun with Japanese immigrants that moved to Brazil in the 1940's.In Brazil the Pastel is a salgado (salty snack) primarily sold on the street with a thin pastry envelope containing cheese, ground beef meat, catupiry and chicken, shrimp or another filling and then deep fried. Sweet pasteis also exist and may contain guava jam and cheese, banana, chocolate, or other fillings.
