High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A patch antenna (also known as a Rectangular Microstrip Antenna) is a popular antenna type. Its name is attributed to the fact that it consists of a single metal patch suspended over a ground plane. The assembly is usually contained inside a plastic radome, which protects the antenna structure from damage (as well as concealing its essential simplicity). Patch antennas are simple to fabricate and easy to modify and customize. They are the original microstrip antenna as described by Howell , which are a length of microstrip transmission line of approximately one-half wavelength. The radiation mechanism arises from discontinuities at each truncated edge of the microstrip transmission line.
