Regimental Sergeant Major Patrick Harper is a fictional character created by Bernard Cornwell in the "Sharpe" series of novels.Harper is a large, fierce-seeming man from Donegal, Ireland, recruited in the early years of the 19th Century into the British Army, and eventually the 95th Rifle Regiment.Harper and Sharpe are initially antagonists, as Harper leads a mutiny against Sharpe's command and conspires to murder him (Sharpe's Rifles). Over the course of the series Harper becomes one of Sharpe's closest friends and his reliable companion, sharing most of his exploits and rising in rank beside him to sergeant and regimental sergeant-major.
