Born in Yorkshire, Hyde came to Canada as a teenager. He was a founding member, with Bob Rock, of Payola$. (They were always commonly referred to also as the Payola$; the definite article is even included with their production credit on the two sticker labels of their debut EP.) Hyde and Rock formed the band in 1978, cheekily naming it after the U.S. radio scandal of the '50s.
