Photonic Crystals are artificial electromagnetic materials formed by periodic optical lattices. They can be engineered to either transport light in self-collimated beams, or to steer light in different directions as a function of wavelength (superprism effect). The many degrees of freedom that enter their design allow tailoring of their properties for specific applications, such as frequency domain multiplexers.
