Podocarpus nivalis (mountain or snow totara) is a species of conifer in the Podocarpaceae family. It is found only in New Zealand. It grows in the mountains and subalpine lands from 37° to the far south New Zealand about 46° South Latitude. Up to 5 m tall (16.5 ft). It is one of the hardiest podocarps of the Southern Hemisphere, it has withstood ?25 °C(?13 °F) in the British Isles, lower temperatures than all ever recorded historically in its native country. It needs high rainfalls. It is a very beautiful plant. Podocarpaceae is a large family of mainly Southern Hemisphere conifers, with 18-19 genera and about 170-200 species of evergreen trees and shrubs. The family is a classic member of the Antarctic flora, with its main centres of diversity in Australasia, particularly New Caledonia, Tasmania and New Zealand, and to a slightly lesser extent Malesia and South America (primarily in the Andes mountains).
