Pope Adrian VI (2 March 1459 – 14 September 1523), born Adriaan Florenszoon Boeyens, served as Pope from 9 January 1522 until his death some 18 months later. Born in the Low Countries, he was the last non-Italian Pope until John Paul II, 455 years later, and is, together with Marcellus II, one of only two modern popes to retain his baptismal name after election.
