High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Premier peintre du Roi (First painter to the King) was a post within the administration of the Batiments du Roi of the departement de la Maison du Roi in France under the Ancien Regime, just below the post of directeur general des Batiments, Arts et Manufactures de France. Its holder occupied a similar position to that of Premier architecte du Roi (albeit a far less prestigious one). The holder was not in charge of any staff and the role was often without a holder. The Batiments du Roi was a division of Department of the household of the Kings of France (the "Maison du Roi") in France under the Ancien Regime. It was responsible for building works at the King's residences in and around Paris. The Batiments du Roi was created by Henry IV of France to coordinate the building works at his royal palaces. Formerly, each palace had its own superintendent of works. Henry gave the task of supervising all works to Maximilien de Bethune, duc de Sully.
