Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. In music, a prolongation or chord prolongation a chord progression is governed by one chord, to which the various chords of the progression are subordinate and prolong. Contrapuntal and harmonic prolongation may be distinguished. Especially in Schenkerian analysis, a prolongation creates the detail of a musical composition by elaborating the background structure. Prolongations include diminutions. A coda is a passage which brings a movement or piece to a conclusion through prolongation. Straus describes prolongation as, "the sense of continuation of a musical object, particularly when not literally present... prolongation is a cognitive act of the listener". Straus (1987) gives four conditions for Schenkerian prolongations. Methods of prolongation include horizontalization, the horizontal unfolding in time over a background governed by the vertical intervals found in the chord.
