Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Public opinion on same-sex marriage in the United States has been tracked by polling data for well over a decade. As of the year 2010, polls provide differing answers to the question of how the majority of Americans view same-sex marriage, although it is clear that support for same-sex marriage has increased over the past decade. Opposition to same-sex marriage is correlated with religious attendance, older age, Republican Party affiliation, and residence in the South and Midwest. Support for same-sex marriage correlates with lack of religious affiliation, young age, Democratic Party affiliation, and residence in the Northeast and on the West Coast. Support has also been shown to be higher among residents of major cities as opposed to residents of suburbs and rural areas. In some states, particularly in the Northeast, the West Coast, and the Midwest, polls have shown majority support for same-sex marriage.
