The London Charivari) was a British weekly magazine of humour and satire established in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and engraver Ebenezer Landells. It was most historically influential in the 1840s and 50s, for example helping to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration, it would remain a British institution for decades with circulation not peaking until the 1940s before going into a long decline and closing in 1992, with a brief renewal from 1996 to 2002. Punch was founded on 17 July 1841 by Henry Mayhew and engraver Ebenezer Landells. It was jointly edited by Mayhew and Mark Lemon. Initially it was subtitled The London Charivari, this being a reference to a satirical humour magazine published in France as Le Charivari.
