General economic development, and more specifically the analysis of the economic situation, has aroused great interest in recent years. More and more frequently, news items on this subject are cited as proof from which long term conclusions are drawn. Results reached in a specific country or region are quickly used to verify local evolution and to compare this with the national and international landscape. This current study analyzes a variety of procedures and techniques for the measurement of economic activity using synthetic indicators of activity. Classic formulations will be used, as well as new formulations based in the methodology of state-space.
