Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The R28 was a New York City Subway car built in 1960 by American Car and Foundry (ACF). They operated on the IRT (also known as the A Division) in married pairs. The R28 cars were rebuilt during 1985-87 into Redbirds by Morrison Knudsen in Hornell, New York. The R28 fleet ended their lives on the 2 and 5 trains before being retired in 2002. Cars 7924-7925 and 7926-7927 survive. 7926-27 are currently in the Illinois Railway Museum collection undergoing restoration. 7924-25 are still on the New York City Subway property used for work service, coupled to other Redbirds. These were the last ever passenger cars built by ACF, which has since continued to focus on freight rolling stock.
