It was first broadcast on TVB in Hong Kong in 1992. The story is an unofficial prequel to Louis Cha's novel The Legend of the Condor Heroes. It tells the story behind the birth of Wong Chung-yeung and Wong's early life. Cha's fiction, which is of the Wuxia ("martial arts and chivalry") genre, has a widespread following in Chinese-speaking areas, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and the United States.
