High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Ragnar Winther (born 1949) is a Norwegian mathematician. He took his PhD in 1977, and was appointed professor at the University of Oslo in 1991. In 2002 he became the leader of the Centre of Mathematics for Applications there. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (Norwegian: Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi, DNVA) is a learned society based in Oslo, Norway.The city got its university in 1811. The idea of a learned society in Christiania surfaced for the first time in 1841. The city of Throndhjem had no university, but had a learned society—Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters established as far back as 1760. The purpose of a learned society in Christiania was to support scientific studies and aid publication of academic papers.
