Rail transport in Yemen does not currently exist outside plans and proposals. The first of these appeared in the days of the Ottoman Empire, when it was suggested that the Hejaz railway might eventually be extended as far as Yemen, but this never materialized. More recently, in 2005, the Yemeni government began to investigate the possibility of constructing rail connections as part of a larger upgrade to transportation infrastructure. In 2008, it was announced that the Gulf Cooperation Council had agreed include Yemen in plans for an integrated regional rail system — as part of this, feasibility studies on lines to Yemen have been launched. Yemen has proposed that a coastal route beginning in Aden be the preferred option.
