High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Rainer Ernst Burkard (born January 28, 1943, Graz, Austria ) is an Austrian mathematician. His research interests include discrete optimization, graph theory, applied discrete mathematics, and applied number theory. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Vienna in 1967 and received his habilitation from the University of Graz in 1971. Since 1981 Rainer Burkard is full professor with the Graz University of Technology. Discrete optimization is a branch of optimization in applied mathematics and computer science. As opposed to continuous optimization, the variables used in the mathematical program (or some of them) are restricted to assume only discrete values, such as the integers.
