The channel focuses exclusively on news, events, and culture of the Telangana region of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Its slogan is Telangana Gunde Chappudu, meaning The pulse of Telangana. The channel also has Urdu news bulletins in some evening slots. Raj News started on 4th March 2010, in the wake of popular agitations throughout region for creation of a separate Telangana state within the Indian Union. Various groups leading the statehood-movement felt that with a majority of Telugu news channels being operated by individuals from other regions of Andhra Pradesh (which are against the creation of Telangana), there is the obvious scope for partiality and misreporting which could impact the movement. This paved the way for a 24-hour news channel that confines itself to news of the region, which also propagates the Telangana identity.
