High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! In chemistry, reaction quotient: Qr is a function of the extent of reaction: ?, the relative proportion of products and reactants present in the reaction mixture at some instant of time. The Reaction Quotient, Qr, relating to a chemical reaction equation, has the same expression as the equilibrium constant for that reaction. However, the reaction quotient is computed using the current concentrations or pressures, not the equilibrium concentrations. For a chemical mixture with certain initial concentrations of reactants and products, it is useful to know if the reaction will shift to the right/in the forward direction (increasing the concentrations of the products) or if it will shift to the left/in the reverse direction (increasing the concentrations of the reactants). In a chemical process, chemical equilibrium is the state in which the chemical activities or concentrations of the reactants and products have no net change over time. Usually, this would be the state that results when the forward chemical process proceeds at the same rate as their reverse reaction.
