North America’s colonization exposed indigenous cultures to unspeakable transgressions and forced survivors onto ever-shrinking reservations to live under the laws of white pioneers. Today, small Western and indigenous farmers are threatened by a new kind of colonizer: Corporate America. For many still trying to “live simply” or “survive off the land,” the only answer has been to push north and west toward the maps’ dwindling blank spots. Welcome to Deadhorse follows the journey of a man running from a broken-down Dakota farm. Lured by myths of the north, he travels to Alaska where he finds more of what he thought he’d left behind: isolation, restlessness, a traumatic past. Eventually he returns to the ruins of his former life, determined to rebuild. In “Epilogue: The Other Life,” the man decides not to return to a home that he knows no longer exists but to move forward, embracing his restlessness and the mysterious calling he’s heard his entire life. This book is for anyone wanting to overcome despair, anyone who has ever returned to rebuild, or pushed forward to follow their calling.

The author conducts a support group for 20 Jewish parents (ten couples) of children diagnosed with autism. The author finds that for parents struggling with or living with the diagnosis of a child with autism, the experience presents challenges to their faith system and belief in God. This informal, or embedded, theology—based on the theological assumptions they make both consciously and unconsciously about the way and the why the world works as it does—collapses in light of their changed reality. The support group enables parents in such a predicament to explore their faith assumptions and their relationship with God in order to reframe their life’s experiences into a theologically, emotionally and mentally meaningful understanding, into a deliberative theology consciously articulated. Creating such a deliberative theology— based on carefully reflected theological convictions— offers the participants hope and courage as they face the trials and tribulations that life inevitably throws their way.
