Born in Tucson, Arizona, Hyland graduated from Rincon High School in 1985 and went on to study film, television and theatre arts at the University of Arizona. He received a Fine Arts degree in Media Arts in December 1990. Hyland most recently played the "Immigration Officer" who asks tough questions of the title character in the film drama "Alma". Directed and written by award-winning filmmaker Yuri Makino, "Alma" continues festival screenings in 2009. "Alma" won its first prize, The Ledo Matteoli Award for Best Immigrant Story, at the Humboldt Film Festival in Arcata, California In the comedy film "America 101", Hyland plays the "Border Patrolman" who does not believe the stories of the two brothers who are trying to turn themselves in and want to be deported out of the country. "America 101" was the winner of the Audience Prize at both the Golden Film Festival in Colorado and the Dances With Films festival in California. It was released on DVD in October 2006.
