He won numerous awards throughout his career, among them the 1983 Constantijn Huygens Prize. The Constantijn Huygens Prize (Dutch: Constantijn Huygensprijs) is a literary prize in the Netherlands. Since 1947 the prize is awarded each year for an author's complete works by the Jan Campert-Stichting (Jan Campert Foundation). The prize is named after Constantijn Huygens, a Dutch poet, diplomat, scholar and composer in the seventeenth century who was the father of Christiaan Huygens. It comes with a monetary award of € 10 000. In 1968 the prize has not been awarded. In 1982 Jan Wolkers refused to accept the Constantijn Huygens Prize.
