Born in Colorado, Irving's family moved to Santa Barbara, California in 1960 where he studied piano as a child and took up trombone at age 11. He moved to Los Angeles in 1975 to become the musical director for The Sandpipers. He toured with Englebert Humperdink, Nina Hagen and Rita Coolidge, and composed or performed with Timothy B. Schmidt, Kenny Loggins, Roy Orbison, Kim Carnes, Bette Midler. Started his film scoring career in 1988 with Rude Dog and the Dweebs followed by Jim Henson's Muppet Babies and All Dogs Go to Heaven. Irving also co-composed Let the Season Take Wing with Kevin Quinn for Amy Grant in 1992, and Another Angel for Vince Gill
