He is presently serving as a professor of Chemistry at Yale University in the United States. He is a naturalized citizen of the United States. Dr. Crabtree is not to be confused with Robert H. Crabtree, founder and chief scientist of the Yellowstone Ecological Research Center. Crabtree studied at Brighton College (1959-1966). He received a B.A. degree from New College, Oxford in 1970, studying under Malcolm Green. He received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Sussex in 1973, studying under Joseph Chatt. He performed postdoctoral research under Hugh Felkin at the Institut de Chimie des Substances Naturelles at Gif-sur-Yvette, near Paris. He was a postdoctoral fellow (1973-1975) and then attache de recherche (1975-1977). At the end of that time he was charge de recherche.
