Born in Cleveland, Ohio to a family of modest means and "Victorian pretensions as to the importance of art in daily life," Robert grew up often visiting art exhibits and shows with an aunt who was also an excellent artist in pastels and ceramic sculpture. Robert moved Plainfield, Vermont in 1946, and began attending Goddard College .
