The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Corrientes (erected 21 January 1910, as the Diocese of Corrientes) is in Argentina and is a metropolitan diocese, responsible for the suffragan Dioceses of Goya, Posadas, Puerto Iguazu and Santo Tome. It was elevated on 10 April 1961. In Christian churches with episcopal polity, the rank of metropolitan bishop, or simply metropolitan, pertains to the diocesan bishop or archbishop (then more precisely called metropolitan archbishop) of a metropolis; that is, the chief city of a historical Roman province, ecclesiastical province, or regional capital.
