The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Cuenca (Latin: Archidioecesis Conchensis in Aequatore) is an archdiocese located in the city of Cuenca in Ecuador. Erected as the Diocese of Cuenca from territory of the Diocese of Quito on July 1, 1786, it was elevated to archdiocese status on April 9, 1957. An archbishop (from Greek -, chief, and , bishop) is a bishop of higher rank, but not of higher sacramental order above that of the three orders of deacon, priest (presbyter) and bishop. Accordingly, one does not become an archbishop by ordination.
