The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mendoza (erected 20 April 1934, as the Diocese of Mendoza) is in Argentina and is a metropolitan diocese, responsible for the suffragan Dioceses of Neuquen and San Rafael. It was elevated on 10 April 1961. In Christian churches with episcopal polity, the rank of metropolitan bishop, or simply metropolitan, pertains to the diocesan bishop or archbishop (then more precisely called metropolitan archbishop) of a metropolis; that is, the chief city of a historical Roman province, ecclesiastical province, or regional capital.
