High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Archdiocese of Oviedo (Latin: Oveten(sis)) is an Archdiocese of the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic church in Spain. The archdiocese encompasses roughly the current autonomous community of Asturias or Principality of Asturias. Erected in the 9th century, the diocese was elevated to an archdiocese in 1954. The diocesan see is in the city of Oviedo, where the Catedral de San Salvador is located. A Diocese is the district or see under the pastoral care of a bishop, it is divided into parishes. In some forms of Christianity, a diocese is an administrative territorial unit administered by a bishop. It is also referred to as a bishopric or Episcopal Area (as in United Methodism)/episcopal see, though strictly the term episcopal see refers to the domain of ecclesiastical authority officially held by the bishop, and bishopric to the post of being bishop.
