The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Resistencia (erected 3 June 1939, as the Diocese of Resistencia) is in Argentina and is a metropolitan diocese, responsible for the suffragan Dioceses of Formosa and San Roque de Presidencia Roque Saenz Pena. It was elevated on 28 February 1984. In Christian churches with episcopal polity, the rank of metropolitan bishop, or simply metropolitan, pertains to the diocesan bishop or archbishop (then more precisely called metropolitan archbishop) of a metropolis; that is, the chief city of a historical Roman province, ecclesiastical province, or regional capital.
