The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Jose de Costa Rica (erected 28 February 1850 as the Diocese of San Jose de Costa Rica) is a Metropolitan Archdiocese, responsible for the dioceses of Alajuela, Cartago, Ciudad Quesada, Limon, Puntarenas, San Isidro de El General and Tilaran.The see was elevated to an archdiocese on 16 February 1921. In Christian churches with episcopal polity, the rank of metropolitan bishop, or simply metropolitan, pertains to the diocesan bishop or archbishop (then more precisely called metropolitan archbishop) of a metropolis; that is, the chief city of a historical Roman province, ecclesiastical province, or regional capital.
