High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tuxtla Gutierrez is a Metropolitan Archdiocese in Mexico. Based in the city of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, it is responsible for the suffragan dioceses of San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tapachula. Pope Benedict XVI elevated it to the level of an archdiocese on 25 November 2006. In Roman (Latin Rite) Catholicism, a metropolitan archdiocese is an archdiocese which is the head of an ecclesiastical province. The archbishop of the archdiocese is called the metropolitan. A Diocese is the district or see under the pastoral care of a bishop, it is divided into parishes. In some forms of Christianity, a diocese is an administrative territorial unit administered by a bishop. It is also referred to as a bishopric or Episcopal Area (as in United Methodism)/episcopal see, though strictly the term episcopal see refers to the domain of ecclesiastical authority officially held by the bishop, and bishopric to the post of being bishop.
