The Diocese of Cheju is a particular church of the Roman Catholic Church in South Korea. Its mother church is Cheju Joong-Ang Cathedral. The episcopal see was created as an Apostolic Prefecture on June 28, 1971 and elevated to a diocese on March 21, 1977, both by Pope Paul VI. The diocese is suffragan to the Archbishop of Gwangju. An episcopal see (Latin: episcopalis sedes) is, in the original sense, the official seat of a bishop. This seat, which is also referred to as the bishop's cathedra, is placed in the bishop's principal church, which is therefore called the bishop's cathedral. The seat is also called the bishop's throne, especially in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
