The diocese was founded in 1227 with its seat in Milcov, serving the Cumans and the Teutonic Knights in the Burzenland. The diocese was destroyed during the course of the Mongol invasion of Europe in 1241. It was a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Esztergom. An archdiocese is presided over by an archbishop whose see may have or had importance due to size or historical significance.
