The Latin Rite Catholic Diocese of Hamilton in New Zealand is a suffragan diocese of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington. It was formed on 6 March 1980 from a portion of the territory in the Diocese of Auckland. The Latin Rite Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington, one of the two original dioceses in New Zealand (along with the Diocese of Auckland, erected as a suffragan diocese on 20 June 1848) dates its formal history from when the Church erected it on 20 June 1848. (Previously the Church government operated within the framework of the Apostolic Vicariate of New Zealand, erected in 1842, and with Jean Baptiste Pompallier as Vicar Apostolic.)
