The Roman Catholic Diocese of Juticalpa (erected 6 March 1949, as the Territorial Prelature of Inmaculada Concepcion de la B.V.M. en Olancho) is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa. It was elevated as the Diocese of Juticalpa on 31 October 1987. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa (erected 1561, as the Diocese of Comayagua) is a metropolitan see in Honduras. It was elevated as the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa on 2 February 1916. In Christian churches with episcopal polity, the rank of metropolitan bishop, or simply metropolitan, pertains to the diocesan bishop or archbishop (then more precisely called metropolitan archbishop) of a metropolis; that is, the chief city of a historical Roman province, ecclesiastical province, or regional capital.
