The Roman Catholic Diocese of Veracruz (erected 9 June 1962) is a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Jalapa. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Jalapa is a Metropolitan Archdiocese in Mexico, based in the city of Xalapa, Veracruz. It is responsible for the suffragan dioceses of Coatzacoalcos, Cordoba, Orizaba, Papantla, San Andres Tuxtla, Tuxpan and Veracruz. A suffragan diocese is a diocese in the Catholic Church that is overseen not only by its own diocesan bishop but also by a metropolitan bishop. The metropolitan bishop is always an archbishop who governs his own diocese (archdiocese), while he presides at the same time over the bishops of the ecclesiastical province composed of his diocese and the suffragan diocese(s).
