The Round Church, also known as the Golden Church or the Church of St John is a large partially preserved early medieval Eastern Orthodox church in Preslav, the former capital of the First Bulgarian Empire during its heyday, in modern times a town in northeastern Bulgaria. Unearthed and first examined in 1927–1928, it dates to the early 10th century, the rule of Tsar Simeon I. Hailed as one of the most impressive examples of medieval Bulgarian architecture, the Round Church takes its name from the distinctive shape of one of its three sections, namely the cella (naos), which is a rotunda. The church's alternative appellation, the Golden Church, stems from its possible and very popular identification with a "new golden church" in Preslav referenced in a medieval literary source.
